Added November 8, 2000: Blackstar is now telling fans that the latest AS&J tape, which is part of the Universal Playback's Classic TV Westerns box set, is not copy-protected with Macrovision. (Earlier, Blackstar was saying that it was encoded.) At least one US fan has successfully had a tape converted from PAL to NTSC using an internet service.

Added November 3, 2000: The Universal Playback website is now open and they have an extensive AS&J page (as well as a short page on Ben's 1976 show, The Gemini Man.) You can register and give the name of your favorite show. Clicking the Contract link gives an e-mail address where suggestions can be made for future video releases.

Added October 23, 2000: The latest AS&J tape from Universal Playback is now on sale in the UK. It's in PAL format and is only sold as part of a three box set on Classic TV Westerns. The other tapes in the set have episodes of The Virginian and its spin-off, The Men from Shiloh. Episodes on the AS&J tape are from early in the first season: "The McCreedy Bust", "Exit From Wickenburg", and "Return to Devil's Hole". Internet sites that sell the box set include Amazon (UK) and Blackstar. Note that most VCRs in the US will NOT play PAL tapes. WARNING: These new tapes are encoded with an anti-piracy process called Macrovision. Many companies that convert from PAL to NTSC format may NOT be able to convert the tape. Proceed at your own risk. (Apparently the February 2000 release, AS&J Vol. 1--or at least early tapes of it--were not Macrovision encoded.)

Added October 12, 2000: Universal Playback. This is the new, soon to be unveiled website of the UK's Universal Studios unit that releases classic TV shows on video. Universal Playback was responsible for the release, earlier this year, of Classic TV Westerns, AS&J, Vol. 1. The site will be launched on October 30, but in the meantime you can pre-register. Can anyone think of a classic Universal TV programme to suggest for future video releases?

Added August 2000: Several fans have been told by Blackstar and/or Universal sources that Universal Playback has no current plans to continue their commercial PAL series of AS&J videos. Volume 1 sales may not have been sufficient for Universal to feel that a Volume 2 is justified. If you want to change this, contact Universal. Also, do what you can to get more people to buy Volume 1. Addresses and contact information can be found at the AS&J Trivia website.
