THE DOAN REPORT: NEW ACTOR TO POP UP IN "ALIAS SMITH" ROLE IN WESTERN TV SERIES
TV Guide, January 1972

The star is dead. Long live the star. ABC will offer no explanation on February 3 when an actor named Roger Davis turns up on Alias Smith and Jones playing one of the co-starred title roles. The network will presume that nearly everybody has read the papers and knows Pete Duel, who portrayed Hannibal Heyes, alias Joshua Smith, in the drama of two young outlaws seeking amnesty for their criminal past, was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound at his Hollywood hills home. Viewers of the ABC Western know Davis's voice: he is the off-camera narrator. He has been seen in a couple of ABC's made-for-TV movies, "The Young Country" and "River of Gold," and also in the ABC serial, Dark Shadows.
